Some people think that governments should decide the subjects for students to study in universities. Others believe that students should be allowed to apply for the subjects they prefer. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. (20160730)
No one can deny that governments play an extremely significant role in diffusing education in majority of countries in the world, whereas this does not imply that governments are supposed to be the decision makers for choosing what universities students ought to learn. Meanwhile, only with ample assistance from others, can it be rational that students themselves are responsible for making up their mind to apply for what they are going to learn and what kind of people they are going to be.
People supporting that governments with sufficiently long-term thinking are more likely to choose subjects for college students to be competitive in future job market and namely to be useful for societies, believe courses college students are willing to apply for are less likely to make them outstanding after their graduation due to their lack of both life and working experience. Notwithstanding, this cannot be seen as an excuse for neglecting students' aspiration of their own future.
University students are still at such a young age when what sorts of subjects they choose may to a great extent depend on their interest, which can be probably immature and harebrained. The possible consequence of this situation might be that after a few years study they ultimately find out the plight that what they have chosen is unluckily not what they are really fond of. By analogy, choosing the subjects with only considering students' interest is highly risky and uncertain.
I, personally, hold the standpoint that both governments and college students should function from different perspectives. Providing adequate guidance and necessary analysis of relevant data for university students is what governments should shoulder in order to help them make the most appropriate decision. Simultaneously, students while choosing courses ought to take quite many factors into consideration comprehensively rather than their interest only.
