Young people who commit serious crimes should be punished in the same way as adults. Agree or disagree?
1.Introduction
2.Positive sides
关键词句推荐:be aware of. Realization. consequences. Profound. Be a deterrent to.
3.Negative sides
Deny sb of sth. Living conditions. Leniency.
4. Conclusion
In many countries, thecrime rateof young people is rising drastically, and in order to put a stop to it, people suggest they receive the same punishment as adults do.
One of the reasons for such idea is that teenagers and young adults in their early 20s in modern society receive education about the law throughout their school life, so they are quite aware of the consequences of their actions before committing any crimes just as their older counterparts do. As a result, serious offenses such as manslaughter, rape or robbery must not go without severe penalty, which is both done in fairness and sending a strong signal to the society that anyone, regardless of age, should take considerable account of what their deeds can entail.
However, critics argue that young offenders are deprived of opportunities to be rehabilitated. For instance, a 15 year old being given a sentence of 20 years in prison may find it extremely hard to restart a lifeonce released, because he or she may be rejected by any job interview for the criminal record and have no skills necessary for self-employment. It is possible that prejudice and discrimination can lead to a second-time offense. Besides, leniency should also be shown to those who commit serious crimes without the knowledge of the law, such as teenagers of poverty-stricken families that can neither afford education nor be free of the negative influences around them. In a word, convictions should give priority to special cases as mentioned above over the gravity of the crime.
I personally believe that young people should be given the same punishment as adults if they break the law in a serious manner, but there ought to be some flexibility in treating cases of different natures.
